Sorting rules

Sorting rules

Set the store-wide rules every collection follows — sort order, tiebreaker, sales lookback, out-of-stock and new arrival handling, tags, rules and schedule.

Sorting rules is where you decide how SmartSort AI ranks products. These rules apply to every collection you turn on, unless a collection has its own settings (see Collection settings).

Sort order

Sort by is the main ranking for each collection — for example Number of sales – high to low or Newest first. There are 22 sort orders in six groups: sales, date, price and profit, inventory, engagement and other. The sort orders reference describes each one.

Then by (the secondary sort) breaks ties. Products that sold the same number of units, for example, are then ordered newest first. Leave it empty to keep tied products in their current order.

Sales data

These options apply to the sales-based sort orders (Number of sales, Revenue and Trending), and to rule conditions on units sold and revenue:

  • Lookback period — how many days of orders count, from 1 to 365. The default is 30 days. A shorter window reacts faster to what’s selling now; a longer one is steadier.
  • Orders to count — all orders, only paid orders, or only fulfilled orders. Cancelled orders never count.

Revenue is the line item total after discounts, in your store’s currency.

Tip: SmartSort AI imports the last 60 days of orders when you install it, then records every new order. A lookback longer than 60 days fills up as new orders come in.

Prices

Ignore out-of-stock variants for price makes price sorting use the lowest price among variants that are in stock, so a product isn’t ranked by the price of a size nobody can buy.

Out of stock and new arrivals

  • Push out-of-stock products to the bottom moves products that can’t be bought below everything else, and brings them back up once they’re restocked.
  • Promote new products keeps new products near the top for a number of days, and can treat restocked products as new.

Both are explained in New arrivals and out-of-stock products.

Tags and rules

  • Tag priorities push products with certain tags to the top or bottom — see Sort by tags.
  • Merchandising rules push products that match your conditions to the top or bottom — see Merchandising rules.

Schedule

Choose when collections re-sort automatically: daily at a set time, every few hours, or only when you ask. You can also turn on real-time re-sorting. See Schedules and real-time sorting.

Saving and applying changes

When you save, the new rules apply to every collection that follows the store-wide rules, from its next sort. To apply them everywhere right away, click Re-sort all now on the Dashboard.

Some options are part of specific plans. If an option isn’t in your plan, SmartSort AI tells you which plan includes it when you try to save. See Plans and billing.
