Merchandising rules

Create rules that push products up or down by tags, vendor, type, price, inventory, sales, revenue, age, discount or margin.

Merchandising rules let you describe exactly which products deserve more — or less — visibility. Each rule has conditions and an action: push to top or push to bottom. Rules are part of the Growth plan and up.

Create a rule

In Sorting rules (or a collection’s own settings), find Merchandising rules and add a rule:

  1. Name it so you recognise it later, for example “Northwind in stock”.
  2. Choose how conditions combine: products must match all conditions, or any of them.
  3. Add conditions — a field, a comparison and a value.
  4. Choose the action: push to top, or push to bottom.
  5. Save. Use Preview on a collection to see which products the rule moves.

You can add up to 50 rules with up to 20 conditions each, and switch a rule off without deleting it.

Fields

Field What it checks
Tag The product’s tags.
Vendor The product’s vendor.
Product type The product’s type.
Title The product’s title.
Price The lowest variant price, in your store’s currency.
Inventory Total inventory across variants and locations.
Units sold (lookback) Units sold in your lookback period.
Revenue (lookback) Revenue after discounts in your lookback period.
Days since created How many days ago the product was created.
Discount % The biggest discount from compare-at price among its variants.
Margin % Margin from price and cost per item (0 when there’s no cost).

Comparisons

  • Text fields (vendor, product type, title): is, is not, contains, does not contain. Upper and lower case are ignored.
  • Tag: is means the product has exactly that tag; contains means one of its tags contains the text; is not and does not contain are the opposites.
  • Number fields: is, is not, greater than, at least, less than, at most.

How rules interact

  • Products matching a push to top rule are placed after featured products, new arrivals and products with a push-to-top tag.
  • Products matching a push to bottom rule are placed after products with a push-to-bottom tag, just before out-of-stock products.
  • A product joins the group of the first rule it matches, in the order your rules are listed, and each group is ranked by your sort order.
  • Out-of-stock handling, new arrivals and tag priorities are checked before rules, so a sold-out product goes to the bottom even if a rule would push it up.

Examples

Goal Rule
Feature a brand that’s well stocked Vendor is Northwind and Inventory greater than 20 → push to top
Bury slow, old stock Days since created greater than 180 and Units sold less than 1 → push to bottom
Protect margin Margin % at least 60 → push to top
Sink low-value items Price less than 5 → push to bottom
Promote deals Discount % at least 30 → push to top

Tip: Rules apply to every collection that follows the store-wide rules. To use a rule in only one collection, add it in that collection’s settings.
