Sorting rules
Sort by tags
Push products with certain tags to the top or bottom of your collections, in the priority order you choose.
Tag priorities let you move products up or down using the tags you already put on products in Shopify — “hero”, “summer-26”, “clearance”, “final-sale”. They’re part of the Starter plan and up.
Set up tag priorities
In Sorting rules (or a collection’s own settings), find Tags:
- Under Push to top, add the tags whose products should rise. Start typing to pick from the tags in your store.
- Under Push to bottom, add the tags whose products should sink.
- Put each list in priority order — the first tag is the strongest — and save.
Each list holds up to 100 tags. Tags match regardless of upper or lower case, so “Clearance” and “clearance” are the same tag.
How the order works
Products with a push to top tag are placed after featured products and new arrivals:
- Products with the first tag in the list come first, then products with the second tag, and so on.
- Within each tag group, products are ranked by your sort order, so the best-selling “hero” product leads the “hero” group.
- A product with several listed tags joins the group of the tag that’s highest in the list.
Products with a push to bottom tag are placed after everything else, but before out-of-stock products, in the same way.
If a product has a tag from both lists, the push to top tag wins. If it also matches a merchandising rule, the tag decides — tags are checked before rules.
Ideas
- Push “hero” or “bestseller” to the top in every collection.
- Push “clearance”, “final-sale” or “gift-card” to the bottom.
- Keep a “best-seller” tag up to date automatically with Smart tagging, then push it to the top.
Tip: Tags you add or remove in Shopify are picked up within a minute. The collection uses them at its next sort — straight away with real-time re-sorting.
