Privacy and data
What Rack Scanner reads from your store, what it stores about your team, what it changes in Shopify, and what happens to your data when you uninstall.
Rack Scanner needs your catalog, stock and orders to count inventory and pack orders. It doesn’t store your customers’ personal details. This article summarizes how data is handled; the privacy policy has the full details.
What Rack Scanner reads from your store
Rack Scanner asks Shopify for these permissions: read products, read and write inventory, read locations and read orders.
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Products and variants: titles, images, barcodes, SKUs | To match scanned codes and show what was scanned |
| Inventory levels and locations | To show stock, compare counts and update quantities |
| Orders: number, dates, payment and fulfillment status, total, currency, note, tags, shipping method and line items | To list orders that need packing and verify items |
| Store details: name, email, currency, time zone | To set up your store in Rack Scanner, for example to show times in your time zone |
Order updates from Shopify are limited to the fields above, so customer details aren’t included.
Customer details on packing slips
When staff print a packing slip, Rack Scanner reads the order’s ship-to name, company, address and phone from Shopify to put on the slip. These details are used for that slip only and aren’t stored. See Packing slips and order barcodes.
What Rack Scanner stores about your team
- Accounts: name, email address and a hashed password.
- Devices: platform, model, operating system and app version of phones connected to your store.
- Activity: barcodes scanned, counts submitted and orders packed, with who and when — so you can audit every inventory change.
The mobile app uses the camera only to read barcodes and QR codes. Images are processed on the phone and are never uploaded or stored.
What Rack Scanner changes in your store
- It sets the available inventory quantity at a location when staff submit a count or you import a stock CSV. Counts are recorded as cycle count in Shopify’s inventory history.
- It doesn’t fulfill orders, buy labels, or change products or prices.
Security
- Phones connect with single-use QR codes, and every connection ends after 24 hours.
- Data is encrypted in transit. Shopify access tokens are encrypted at rest and passwords are hashed.
Retention
- Stock CSV files and their reports are deleted after 30 days.
- Orders that no longer need packing are removed from Rack Scanner’s order list 60 days after their last update. Your record of packed orders stays, within your plan’s history window.
When you uninstall
- Phones are disconnected immediately, and any unused QR code stops working.
- Your subscription ends.
- Your store’s data is deleted when Shopify sends its data-removal request, 48 hours after you uninstall. That removes everything stored for your store, including its catalog copy, devices, count sessions and scans.
Your team’s mobile app accounts aren’t tied to one store. Anyone can ask us to delete their account at any time.
