CSV stock import and export
Update stock for a whole location from a two-column CSV file, or download current stock to edit and upload back. Files are processed in the background.
Stock CSV in the Shopify app updates or downloads stock for one location at a time. It’s included on every plan; your plan sets how many rows one import can have.
Step 1: Choose a location
At the top of Stock CSV, choose the location under 1. Choose a location. Imports and exports only touch that location.
If your store has more locations than your plan includes, the page lists the ones that aren’t included. Your default location is always included. See Plans, free trial and billing.
Import stock
The 2a. Import stock card sets the available quantity at the chosen location.
Prepare a CSV file with two columns. Click Download template for a starting file:
sku_or_barcode,stock TEE-ORG-M,24 0036000291452,12Drop the file on the card, or click it to browse.
Click Upload & update stock.
The import runs in the background and appears under History with its progress.
File format
- First row: the column names. Rack Scanner looks for an identifier column named
sku_or_barcode,sku/barcode,sku,barcode,identifierorcode, and a quantity column namedstock, quantity, qtyoravailable. - Separators: commas, semicolons or tabs all work, so files saved from spreadsheet apps in most regions are fine.
- Other columns are ignored, and blank lines are skipped.
- Quantities must be whole numbers.
How rows are matched
Each identifier is matched the same way as a scan: barcode first, then the UPC or EAN equivalents of that barcode, then SKU. SKUs aren’t case-sensitive. See Barcodes and scanning tips.
What gets updated
- Rows whose stock already matches Shopify are skipped and counted as unchanged.
- Other rows set Shopify’s available quantity to the number in the file, replacing what’s there.
- Rows that can’t be applied go into a Problem report.
Important: An import overwrites stock at that location. Unlike a count from the mobile app, it doesn’t check whether stock changed since you prepared the file. Export, edit and import close together.
Problem report
When an import finishes, History shows the result, such as 120 updated · 30 unchanged · 2 problems. Click Problem report to download the rows that weren’t applied, with the row number and the reason:
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No product with this SKU or barcode | Check the identifier, or add the barcode or SKU to the product in Shopify |
| Stock must be a whole number | Fix the quantity in that row |
| Product is not stocked at this location | Stock the product at this location in Shopify first |
| Shopify rejected the update | The message shows Shopify’s reason |
If a file has more rows than your plan allows, the upload is refused with a message. Split the file or upgrade.
Export stock
The 2b. Export stock card downloads current available stock at the chosen location.
- Click Export stock CSV.
- When the export shows Completed under History, click Download.
The file uses the same columns as the import template, plus barcode and product name. Edit the stock column and upload it back. Products without a SKU or barcode aren’t included.
History
History lists your last 30 imports and exports, with the location, status (Queued, Processing, Completed or Failed) and result. The page refreshes on its own while a file is processing. Stock files are deleted after 30 days, so download anything you want to keep.
