Getting started
What ShipRule does
ShipRule hides, shows, renames and reorders shipping methods at checkout with conditional rules, using Shopify Functions. Here’s how it fits together.
ShipRule lets you decide which delivery methods buyers see at checkout. You build rules such as hide express shipping on orders under $50, show only freight to wholesale customers or rename “Standard” to “Standard (3–5 business days)”, and ShipRule applies them to every checkout.
How a rule works
Every rule has two parts:
- Conditions — when the rule applies. You can check the cart, the shipping address, the products in the cart and the customer. Leave conditions empty and the rule applies to every checkout.
- Actions — what happens to the matching delivery methods.
| Conditions you can check | Actions |
|---|---|
| Cart: subtotal, total, total item quantity | Hide delivery methods |
| Location: shipping country, state or province, postal code | Show only the methods you choose |
| Products: specific products, product tags, collections | Rename delivery methods |
| Customer: customer tags, logged in or not | Move methods to another position in the list |
See Conditions and Actions for every option.
How it reaches checkout
ShipRule runs inside Shopify’s checkout through a Shopify Function. On install, it adds one delivery customization named ShipRule to your store, which you can see under Settings → Shipping and delivery → Delivery customizations in Shopify. Every rule you turn on is sent to that customization, and changes reach checkout within a few seconds of saving.
There are no checkout scripts and no theme code to edit. Because ShipRule is a public app, it works on every Shopify plan.
Where rules apply
- Yes: online store checkout, Shop Pay and other accelerated checkouts, B2B checkout, and draft orders completed at checkout.
- No: the cart page, orders created in the Shopify admin, order edits and subscription renewals. Shopify doesn’t run delivery customizations there.
What rules can and can’t do
Rules hide, rename and move the delivery options your shipping settings and carriers return. They can’t create new rates, change prices or merge rates. Two Shopify behaviors to know:
- Carrier-calculated rates keep the carrier name in front when renamed. UPS Standard can become UPS Standard Shipping, but not Standard Shipping.
- Moving a method doesn’t change which one is selected. Shopify still pre-selects the cheapest option.
Built-in safety
- Never hide every option. If your rules would remove every delivery method from a checkout, ShipRule doesn’t hide any of them, so buyers can still check out. It’s on by default. See Rule priority and conflicts.
- Pause anytime. Settings → Pause ShipRule restores your normal shipping options without deleting or turning off your rules. See Manage rules.
A quick tour of the app
ShipRule opens inside your Shopify admin. Its menu has:
- Dashboard — the setup guide, rule counts, your plan, the checkout connection and recent activity.
- Shipping rules — every rule, templates, bulk actions and priority. See Manage rules.
- Activity — changes to your rules, settings and plan.
- Plans — your plan and billing. See Plans, free trial and billing.
- Settings — how matching rules combine, the safety switch, the checkout connection and Pause ShipRule.
Limits to know about
- Unlimited rules on every plan. Shopify limits how much rule data reaches checkout (about 10 kB). The Checkout capacity meter shows how much you use; long postal code or product lists use the most.
- Across all rules that are on, you can use up to 100 different product tags, 100 collections and 100 customer tags.
- Shopify allows at most 25 active delivery customizations per store across all apps. ShipRule uses one.
