Getting started
Create your first rule
From install to a working rule in minutes — choose a plan, start from a template, match it to your shipping methods, save it and check it at checkout.
This guide builds a real rule — hide express shipping on orders under $50 — and checks it in your store’s checkout. The same steps work for every rule.
Before you start
- Install ShipRule from the Shopify App Store and open it from Apps in your Shopify admin. You arrive on the Dashboard, with a Setup guide at the top.
- Choose a plan. Open Plans and choose one. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial and is billed through Shopify. Until you have a plan, ShipRule doesn’t change your checkout. See Plans, free trial and billing.
- Check your shipping rates. For this example, your store needs at least two shipping rates — say, Standard and Express — in Settings → Shipping and delivery.
The setup guide’s Connect ShipRule to checkout step is done for you: ShipRule adds its delivery customization automatically.
Step 1: Start from a template
- Open Shipping rules and click Use a template.
- Choose Hide express shipping on small orders.
The rule editor opens with the rule filled in. Nothing is saved yet.
Tip: To build a rule from scratch instead, click Create rule. See Rule templates for every template.
Step 2: Adjust the rule
The editor has three cards:
- Rule — the Name (only you see it) and an On/Off switch. New rules start on.
- Conditions — here, Cart subtotal is less than 50, in your store’s currency. Change the amount if you like.
- Actions — here, Hide delivery methods whose name contains Express.
Under the method names, Your methods lists the shipping method names set up in your store. Click one to add it, or type the name exactly as buyers see it at checkout. Names aren’t case-sensitive. Remove Express if your rate is called something else, such as Priority.
Note: Carrier-calculated rates, such as UPS or FedEx, appear at checkout by their service name. Type them as shown there.
Step 3: Save
Click Save. ShipRule confirms Rule saved. and sends the rule to checkout, which takes a few seconds.
If something needs fixing, the editor shows a message next to the field — for example, when an option is part of a higher plan.
Step 4: Test it at checkout
- In your online store, add products worth less than $50 to the cart and go to checkout.
- Enter a shipping address. The express rate shouldn’t be listed.
- Go back, add more products so the subtotal is over $50, and return to checkout. The express rate appears again.
When it works, click I’ve tested my checkout in the setup guide.
Tip: Rules only run in Shopify’s checkout, not on the cart page. If you had a checkout open before saving, reload it or start a new one.
If the rule doesn’t apply, see Troubleshooting.
