Customer rules: tags and logged-in buyers

Show different delivery methods to wholesale, VIP or guest buyers with customer tag and logged-in conditions, and learn how guests are matched.

Customer conditions look at the buyer’s customer account. Use them to give wholesale customers a freight-only checkout, offer an extra method to VIPs, or treat guests differently from signed-in customers.

Both customer conditions are included on the Growth plan and up.

Condition Comparisons Value
Customer tags includes any of, includes none of One or more tags
Customer is logged in is Yes or No

Customer tags

Customer tags are the tags on the customer’s account in Shopify (Customers → a customer → Tags). In the rule, type a tag and press Enter; add several to match any of them.

  • includes any of — the buyer is logged in and has at least one of the tags.
  • includes none of — the buyer has none of the tags. Guests have no tags, so this matches every guest too.

Tags only work when the buyer signed in to a customer account before checkout. A buyer who checks out as a guest isn’t matched to their account’s tags.

Customer is logged in

Customer is logged in is Yes matches buyers who signed in to a customer account before checkout. is No matches guests.

Examples

Goal Conditions Action
Wholesale customers get freight only Customer tags includes any of wholesale Show only methods whose name contains Freight
Keep a method for signed-in customers Customer is logged in is No Hide methods whose name contains Members
VIPs keep express on small orders Cart subtotal is less than 50 and Customer tags includes none of vip Hide methods whose name contains Express

The wholesale rule is a ready-made template; see Rule templates.

Tip: To try a customer rule on yourself first, give your own customer account a tag that no one else has, use it in the rule, and check out while signed in. Remove the condition, or change the tag, when you’re happy with the result.

Combine with other conditions

Customer conditions work with every other condition. In the VIP example, both conditions must match (Match: all conditions), so VIP customers never lose express. On the Pro plan, condition groups let you write rules such as (subtotal under 50 and not VIP) or shipping to Alaska.

Limits and privacy

  • Across all rules that are on, you can use up to 100 different customer tags. If you go over, ShipRule asks you to remove some or combine rules.
  • Customer tags are matched inside Shopify’s checkout: the rule only gets a yes or no for each tag in your rules. ShipRule doesn’t receive or store customer names, emails or addresses. See Privacy and data.
