Checkout connection

How ShipRule connects to Shopify checkout through one delivery customization, what each connection status means, and how to reconnect it.

2 min read · Updated

ShipRule reaches checkout through one delivery customization named ShipRule, which it creates in your store on install. Every rule that’s on is sent to it. The Checkout connection card on the Dashboard and in Settings shows whether it’s working.

Connection statuses

Status What it means What to do
Live at checkout Your enabled rules are applied to every checkout Nothing
Connecting ShipRule is sending your rules to Shopify. This takes a few seconds Wait, then click Check status
Turned off The delivery customization is off, so checkout shows your normal shipping options Click Turn ShipRule on
Not connected ShipRule isn’t connected to checkout yet Click Reconnect checkout
Needs attention Your latest changes didn’t reach checkout. The card shows the reason Fix what the message says, then click Reconnect checkout

The card also shows Rules at checkout (how many rules are running), Last synced and Checkout config size (how much of Shopify’s limit you use).

Card buttons

  • Reconnect checkout — sends your rules again. If the customization was deleted in Shopify, it’s created again.
  • Turn ShipRule on — turns the customization back on after it was paused.
  • Check status — reads the current state from Shopify.
  • Delivery customizations in Shopify — opens Settings → Shipping and delivery → Delivery customizations in your Shopify admin, where ShipRule is listed.

Note: ShipRule also checks every day that its customization still exists, and creates it again if it was deleted.

Shopify’s limit of 25 customizations

Shopify allows at most 25 active delivery customizations per store, across all apps. ShipRule uses one. If your store is already at the limit, the card says so. Turn off a customization you don’t need under Settings → Shipping and delivery → Delivery customizations, then click Reconnect checkout.

Checkout capacity

Shopify limits how much rule data reaches checkout. ShipRule shows it as Checkout capacity on Shipping rules and in the rule editor, and as Checkout config size on this card. If a change would go over the limit, ShipRule doesn’t save it and tells you why, for example:

  • Your active rules are too large for Shopify checkout — shorten long lists, such as postal codes, or turn off rules you don’t need.
  • Your active rules use … different product tags; Shopify allows up to 100 — the same applies to collections and customer tags. Remove some or combine rules.

When Shopify reports errors

If Shopify reports errors while running ShipRule at checkout, the card says so. Checkout falls back to your normal shipping options when that happens. Contact support so we can look into it — see the support page.

Pausing vs. turning rules off

Pause ShipRule at checkout (in Settings) turns the whole customization off, leaving every rule as it is. Turning individual rules off keeps ShipRule running for the others. See Manage rules.

Without a plan

If your store has no plan, ShipRule sends no rules to checkout, so checkout behaves as if ShipRule weren’t installed. See Plans, free trial and billing.
