# Smart tagging

SmartSort AI · Automation & insights · Updated October 4, 2026

> Keep a tag such as "best-seller" or "low-stock" in sync automatically with conditions or a top-N ranking, for collections, themes and apps.

Smart tagging keeps a product tag up to date for you. Tag your top 20 best sellers “best-seller”, products under 5 units “low-stock”, or this month’s arrivals “new” — SmartSort AI adds and removes the tag as products change. Smart tagging is part of the Growth plan and up.

## Why use smart tags

Tags work everywhere in Shopify:

- **Automated collections** — create a “Best sellers” collection with the condition *Product tag is equal to best-seller*.
- **Themes** — many themes show badges or filters based on tags.
- **Other apps** — reviews, email and search apps can target tags.
- **SmartSort AI itself** — push the tag to the top with [Sort by tags](https://help.fleekapps.com/smartsort-ai/sort-by-tags/).

## Create a workflow

Open **Smart tags** and create a workflow:

1. **Name** — for your reference, for example “Top 20 best sellers”.
2. **Tag** — the tag to keep in sync, for example `best-seller`. Commas aren’t allowed: one workflow manages one tag.
3. **Conditions** — which products qualify. They use the same fields and comparisons as [merchandising rules](https://help.fleekapps.com/smartsort-ai/merchandising-rules/), with units sold and revenue counted over the last 30 days. Match **all** or **any** of them. Leave them empty to consider every active product.
4. **Rank and limit** (optional) — rank the matching products by any sort order and tag only the **top N**, for example the top 20 by *Number of sales*.
5. **Remove the tag when a product no longer matches** — on, to keep the tag exact; off, to only ever add it.

Use **Preview** to see how many products would be tagged, how many would get the tag and how many would lose it, before anything changes.

## When workflows run

Enabled workflows run **every hour**, and you can run one immediately with **Run now**. Only active products are considered.

Each run changes the tag on up to 400 products, to stay well within Shopify’s API limits. If more need to change — for example the first run on a large catalog — the rest are handled in the following hourly runs.

## Turning off or deleting a workflow

Turning a workflow off stops future changes. Deleting it does too, and leaves the tag on the products that currently have it, so nothing in your store changes unexpectedly. Remove the tag in bulk in your Shopify admin if you no longer need it.

## Ideas

| Tag | Conditions |
|---|---|
| `best-seller` | Top 20 by *Number of sales – high to low* |
| `trending` | Top 12 by *Trending (sales velocity)* |
| `low-stock` | Inventory *less than* 5 **and** Inventory *greater than* 0 |
| `new` | Days since created *at most* 30 |
| `on-sale` | Discount % *at least* 10 |
| `high-margin` | Margin % *at least* 60 |
