# Collection settings

SmartSort AI · Collections & schedules · Updated October 4, 2026

> Turn sorting on or off per collection, give a collection its own sort order, schedule, tags or rules, and go back to the store-wide rules.

Every collection can follow your store-wide [Sorting rules](https://help.fleekapps.com/smartsort-ai/sorting-rules/), or have its own strategy. This article covers turning collections on, per-collection settings and bulk actions.

## Turn collections on and off

The **Dashboard** lists your collections with their status, the sort order they use and when they were last sorted.

- **Turn on** — SmartSort AI sorts the collection right away, then on your schedule.
- **Turn off** — SmartSort AI stops sorting it. The collection keeps its current order; to give it back the sort order it had in Shopify before SmartSort AI, use **Restore** (see [Preview, undo and restore](https://help.fleekapps.com/smartsort-ai/preview-undo-restore/#restore-the-original-sort-order)).
- **Re-sort** — sorts the collection now.

Your plan sets how many collections can be turned on at once. Collections that are off are never changed.

## Give a collection its own settings

Per-collection settings are part of the Starter plan and up. Open a collection from the Dashboard and change any of its sorting settings — sort order, tiebreaker, lookback, out-of-stock and new arrival handling, tags, rules or schedule.

The collection keeps only what you change. Everything else still comes from the store-wide rules, so if you later change the store-wide lookback, for example, the collection follows it unless you changed that setting for the collection.

Common examples:

| Collection | Its own setting |
|---|---|
| New In | Sort by *Newest first* |
| Sale | Sort by *Biggest discount first* |
| Gifts | Sort by *Trending*, re-sort more often |
| Accessories | Push the tag “bundle” to the top |

Collections with their own settings are marked **Custom** on the Dashboard.

## Go back to the store-wide rules

Choose **Use global rules** on a collection to remove all of its own settings. It follows the store-wide rules again from its next sort.

## Bulk actions

Select several collections on the Dashboard to **turn them on**, **turn them off**, **re-sort** them or make them **use global rules** in one go. **Re-sort all now** sorts every collection that’s turned on.

## Automated (smart) collections

Automated collections can be sorted like manual ones. Shopify keeps deciding which products are in them, based on their conditions; SmartSort AI decides the order.

## Large collections

SmartSort AI sorts collections of any size. For very large collections it uses its own copy of the collection’s order (kept in sync with Shopify) instead of reading every product from Shopify at each sort, and it only moves the products whose position changes.
